I’m on a mission this year: spend $80 or less per week on groceries for my family of four! After reconciling all our expenses for 2009, all the while remembering the splurges during a special family celebration and replenishing of food storage, I realized I could and would do better in 2010. With the skills I’ve obtained, and the deals on some web sites I’ve discovered, “I hereby pledge to lower my food budget this year!”
As expected, this week I was short on time, energy and ambition. I cut down on my shopping quite a bit, as well as my spending. I stocked up less (if that makes sense), getting mostly the essentials (CHOCOLATE).
This week for just food I spent $41.15, about 1/2 of my weekly budget. This puts me at $268.81 under budget for the year! I stopped in at couple of extra stores along the way this week, and made the best of my time and pennies. Here’s where those pennies went this week:
No Frills: I did price matching this week, and was able to get apples .88/#; cottage cheese 1.48; Oscar Mayer bologna .49 each; Honeysuckle White Italian sausages 1.99/#; Kraft singles, 5 FREE; OF yogurt 3/$1; elbow macaroni .50 each; Hunt’s ketchup .21 (.76 – .55 peelie); 2 small cans mushrooms .88; 12 cans Campbell’s chicken noodle soup 4.68. Total for food: 17.67 I also got Cottonelle 12 pack 4.38; OF detergent 1.75 each.
Big Lots: MaltOMeal cinnamon toasters $1 each. Total for food: $2
Target: Total for food: 6.02
BagNSave: 12 cans Campbell’s tomato soup 4.68; deli ham 5.97; boneless chuck roast 4.92. Total for food: 15.57
Aldi: Milk is still 1.79/gallon. Eggs are 1.39 this week. I got milk; rice 1.39; CHOCOLATE; bread 1.19/loaf. Total for food: 9.89
We’ve eaten well from my stash and a well-planned menu. It looks like we’ll be having some grilled cheese and tomato soup in the coming weeks!
