Life Ain’t Cheap
June 20, 2008
We can’t find many good deals these days. The grocery stores are tightening up, it seems, so they don’t have to discount items. A gallon of non-sale milk is around $3.50, and a dozen eggs about $1.29 — that’s if you shop the chain groceries. (Aldi still has milk for $2.49 and eggs for .99 through the end of June.)
So today, my biggest thrill tip is to eat less. Yup. It’s summer, and time to tune up the table, anyway. Fresh fruits and vegs, even raw, are abundant. But eating less of the meats, carbs, and junk will make you feel better, cooler, and possibly shed a few pounds. Who wants a heavy roast-and-gravy dinner in scorching weather, anyway?
But play it smart! Drink plenty of water (60 oz. each day), maybe instead of that pricey soda, eat whole grains and whole-grain pastas, and fill up on well-washed produce. Get your protein in lean meats, fish, and non-meat sources (eggs, beans, soy, nuts).
Where to find produce at a great price? The Old Market and Village Pointe both have Saturday farmers’ markets through the summer. You can even find local tomatoes there, I’m told, so that scare is off the plate. You’ll support local farmers and bakers. And you’ll get some free exercise. Lets hope that as the corn grows, we’ll still be able to get that Nebraska staple at reasonable cost.
Everything’s going up. All our costs of daily living are intertwined: gas, food, bank rates. Living isn’t cheap. Time to adjust our living habits.
