Even More Ice and Cold
March 4, 2008
Are we done yet?! High temps in this area are still well below average, and of you haven’t figured it out yet, I’m ready for warm weather — now. But wait! There’s more! And this time it’s to our advantage.
March is National Frozen Foods Month. The National Frozen Foods Association sponsors this frenzy each year, and this year the timing couldn’t be better. The sales will have a welcome impact on household budgets everywhere, which makes the icy temps more bearable.
What can we as Midwest consumers expect? Sales that make for stockups! I hope you’ve been saving those coupons, because during NFFM incredible deals are to be had by combining promos. If it’s sold frozen, it will likely be on sale some time in March. If you find a great bargain, snap it up in bulk. Just be sure you’ll be able to use what you buy within a couple of months. Frozen food does expire.
So far, I’ve seen ads for local grocery stores offering 35% savings on popular items. While some of it is processed faux-meal stuff, there are also discount prices on good stuff. Fruits and vegs are most economical in their frozen state at this time of year, and you will see them on sale this month. (Isn’t that what our diets generally need more of?) Fish, chicken, some meats, breads and other basics will also likely go on sale.
Check the labels, though. Some brands have more sodium and other preservatives than others. Check the calorie and fat content compared to serving size. Don’t let the sale override your nutritional sense. I like to use these sales to stock up on prepped vegs, fruits, and other ingredients I can use to put my menus together.
So clean out your freezers, and please, toss out that Thanksgiving turkey backbone you’ve been meaning to use for stock, already. Move the Girl Scout cookies to the pantry (if you tend to hide them from yourself in the freezer), and get rid of the stale ice cubes. Get ready to fill your freezer with good, nutritious foods, and get some cheap thrills while you’re at it.
